Revalidating your BCO certificate

Applicants who already hold a BCO certificate, will need to revalidate every five years.

 In order to revalidate, the holder must complete at least 180 days service as a BCO within five years, continue to hold a valid White List COC or maintain the approval of the flag state to act as a BCO, and maintain the following short course certificates:

  • Personal survival techniques (A-VI/1-1)
  • Minimum standard in competence in firefighting
  • Elementary first aid
  • Personal safety and social responsibilities
  • Hold a proficiency in survival craft (PISC) certificate
  • Security awareness

 In addition, a VHF operator’s certificate recognised by the flag state shall be required.

 Once all the required fields have been completed in the BCO logbook, please contact bco@nautinst.org for further instructions.


 Application documents need to be emailed and posted to The Nautical Institute:

  • Original Confirmation letter - to confirm sea time
  • Original BCO logbook
  • Copy of COC
  • Copy of Basic Stability Course Certificate
  • Copy of Advanced Stability Course Certificate
  • Copy of passport - to confirm name
  • Passport size photo (coloured) JPEG - to print on certificate
  • Copy of valid Practical Training Course Simulator or Simulator Refresher
